After doing some product and audience research I found some
techniques I think would be good in my short film. One technique I saw used a
lot in other, similar products was the use of a handheld ‘shaky’ camera. I
decided to experiment with this by trying it out myself. I got a camera and tried
to replicate a scene from our piece where one of the main characters is being
chased by an unknown person. I thought it would be interesting to have it as if
the person chasing the girl was holding the camera as it would give a creepy,
stalker like effect. Here is an example of something similar:

Another technique I saw used a lot, particularly in video games
was a camera following someone in a third person sense. This technique isn’t
used a lot in short films but I thought it could work in a similar sense to the
handheld camera as it would give the effect of the girl being followed even
though the audience doesn’t know there’s anyone there yet. This would give a
horror like effect which I think would be good in my piece. This was what it
looked like:
To sum up, going out and physically producing something using techniques I hope to use in my short film was very successful because it not only helped me decide what kind of shots I want to integrate into my piece but also made me realise the problems involved in these particular shots. It also showed me that they weren't too difficult to create and will therefore be possible to put into my short film.
