Gerbner came up with cultivation theory. This
is where he studied the effect of television and the perception of crime and he
found that the youth are always the victims for being involved in crime and
this is hugely overestimated. The media gives people the perception that youths
commit all crime and this creates a negative representation of teenagers. This
is shown in My Brother the Devil as the gangs commit crimes such as stabbing
someone, dealing drugs and planning to kill someone else. This is also shown in
Attack the Block as the gang are mugging the nurse at the beginning of the
film, however the representation of these teens changes as the film progresses.
