Theorist: Cohen
Cohen studied media response to the mods and rockers riots in the 1960's which caused moral panic to occur. This is where the media make it clear what values society do not accept, reinforcing hegemony. This shows that when youths try to express themselves in a way that adults have not seen before they try to stop it by showing it as a negative aspect. This means youths are not allowed to express themselves in a way society doesn't see as acceptable. This is shown in the film Quadrophenia where adults don't accept the way youths dress and act. For example, the main character, Jimmy's parents say they don't like his jeans or the music he listens to and other adult characters take advantage of him, for example when he tries to buy drugs from someone in a pub.
