His theory focused on the reality of youth
subcultures challenging the hegemony. He argued that the representation of
youths is very limited as they are either shown as trouble or fun and there is
no in between. It suggests that media representation of youths is not reality.
This means that we never get to see the in between, the good, hard-working teens
who just fade into the background due to being seen by the media as boring.
This is not shown in Attack the Block however, because the teenagers are seen
as trouble but also fun at the same time. This is also not shown in Fast Girls
as the girls are seen as trouble makers, in particular Lisa, but they change
and become fun and good people. It is shown in My Brother the Devil however,
because all characters are involved in the gang and are all seen as trouble.
