Theorist: Giroux

He came up with the theory that media represents youth as an 'empty category' between childhood and adulthood. This means that teens are not understood by adults so they just add in their own ideas to the empty space which they believe to be how youths are. This theory also states that adults don't want their generation to look bad so they use teenagers to place the blame on. This is also shown in films like My Brother the Devil and Attack the Block as the youths are seen as trouble makers. However, in these films he youths also have a good side as in My Brother the Devil, the older brother is trying to escape the gang and trying to stop his younger brother getting involved in it and in Attack the Block, the gang are seen as trouble in the beginning of the film but towards the end they are seen as heroes and just misunderstood by adults.
