Back to the Future

In class we looked at Back to the Future Part II because it was the day the characters traveled to in the film. We looked at how they imagined 2015 to be and how different it actually is. Although they did predict a lot of things, for example, video calling, flat screen TV's and 3D films, they also got multiple things wrong. One thing they got wrong was the existence of hover boards and flying cars. Hover boards are currently being created and are in existence but they are not yet in everyday use, people don't ride them around. Flying cars are also not possible and the closest thing to that is self-driving cars which are currently being tested. These differences show how there is a huge difference in how people thought media would develop compared to how it actually has. However, the similarities also show how many things which seemed virtually impossible when the film was made (in 1989) are now in everyday use. For example, apps like FaceTime and Skype make video calls easily accessible, 3D films are widely shown in cinemas and flat screen TV's are in almost every home.
