Theorist: Acland

He came up with the theory that media representing youths as delinquent allows the state to control them. This is known as 'ideology of protection' and hints at the idea that youths need to be constantly watched. This is because teenage years are when people learn about social roles and values which the state needs to control. This therefore, effects the representations as the adults see youths as all being reckless ans they have to keep enforcing that these actions are bad. This is to enforce the hegemony of how they should not behave when they reach adulthood. My Brother the Devil and Attack the Block support this theory as the main characters are represented as trouble makers. In Attack the Block, this theory is also supported because the main character, Moses, says that the government sent in drugs and guns but they weren't killing each other quick enough. This shows how he believes that the government are trying to control society by getting rid of youths like himself.
